Karpathos is a mountainous island. The ridge that runs across it from north to south reaches significant heights, and the highest point is Kali Limni — 1,215 metres above sea level. It isn't an Alpine peak, but for a medium-sized island in the Mediterranean it's a considerable altitude, high enough to have a different climate at the top, with fog and wind even in high summer.
The climb to Kali Limni is normally done starting from the village of Othos — the highest in Karpathos, at about 510 metres — along a trail that takes around three hours to walk. It isn't a technical hike, but it requires physical preparation, plenty of water and an early start to avoid the heat of the middle of the day.
From the summit of Kali Limni you can see the outline of Turkey. Europe ends right there — or begins, depending on which way you're looking.
The view from the top is one of those that repay every effort. To the west the Ionian Sea, to the east the eastern Aegean with the Turkish coast in the distance. The island of Rhodes appears in good weather. Down below the villages look like white nativity scenes set in the green. It's the point where you truly understand the shape of Karpathos — narrow, elongated, with the backbone that splits it like a fold.
